A Global Social Awareness Campaign For
Mental & Emotional Fitness
What is mental health?
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act and also helps determine how we handle our stresses, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is crucial at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Why is mental health important for overall health?
Mental and physical health are equally important components of overall health. For example, depression increases the risk of various physical health problems, particularly chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke; these can increase the risk of mental illness.
Can your mental health change over time?
Yes, it’s important to remember that a person’s mental health can change over time, depending on many factors. When the demands placed on a person exceed their resources and coping abilities, their mental health could be impacted. For example, if someone is working long hours, caring for a relative, or experiencing economic hardship, they may experience poor mental health.

WHY
Youth mental and emotional fitness is a significant issue that affects millions of young people worldwide. Mental and emotional fitness refers to an individual's psychological and emotional well-being. It encompasses a broad range of issues, including depression, anxiety, stress, substance abuse, eating disorders, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. According to the World Health Organization, depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents globally. In addition, anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problems affecting young people, with an estimated 10-20% of children and adolescents experiencing anxiety-related disorders.

Several factors contribute to the prevalence of mental and emotional health problems among young people. These factors include family conflict, bullying, academic pressure, peer pressure, social isolation, and exposure to traumatic events. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a significant impact on young people's mental and emotional health, with increased levels of anxiety, depression, and stress reported worldwide. As a society, we must prioritize the mental and emotional well-being of our youth to support their development into healthy and resilient adults. By working together, we can create a world where young people have the resources, environment and support they need to thrive.

HOW
1. Breaking stigma
Mental health conditions are often stigmatized, leading to discrimination, misunderstanding, and reluctance to seek help. A social awareness movement helps challenge misconceptions and promotes understanding, acceptance, and empathy towards individuals with mental health challenges.
2. Promoting early intervention and prevention:
Many mental health conditions can be effectively managed or even prevented with early intervention. A social awareness movement encourages individuals to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health issues, seek help promptly, and engage in preventive practices to maintain their mental well-being with our Mental Fitness Loop.
3. Increasing access to resources and support:
A significant barrier to mental health care is the lack of access to resources and support systems. A social awareness movement can advocate for improved availability and affordability of mental health services, encouraging policymakers and organizations to invest in mental health infrastructure and support networks.
4. Empowering individuals to seek help:
By raising awareness and promoting dialogue, a social awareness movement empowers individuals to recognize when they need assistance and overcome the fear or shame associated with seeking help. It encourages people to prioritize their mental health and reach out to professional resources, support groups, or helplines.
5. Influencing policy and systemic change:
By mobilizing public support and advocacy efforts, a social awareness movement can drive policy changes that prioritize mental health in healthcare systems, educational institutions, workplaces, and other social structures. It can promote the integration of mental health support into various sectors and ensure the rights and well-being of individuals with mental health conditions are protected.
